19/04/2010: Philippine Embassy Honors Filipino World War II Veterans in Commemoration of Araw Ng Kagitingan

19 APRIL 2010 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa, together with the officers and staff of the Embassy honored Filipino World War II veterans during a simple ceremony held at the Romulo Hall of the Philippine Embassy in commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan.

Shortly after the flag raising ceremony, Ambassador Gaa (upper left photo) in his remarks recalled the supreme sacrifice of thousands of Filipinos who fought with honor and valor, saying “we owe our greatest generation a debt of gratitude that we – and all freedom loving peoples of the world – can only repay by honoring them, by being ever vigilant against any attempt at aggression and oppression in our country and beyond, and by pursuing greater peace, progress and prosperity in the Philippines and throughout the world.”

Assisted by Philippine Embassy Head of Veterans Affairs Office B/Gen. (Ret) Victor Corpus (left, lower right photo), Ambassador Gaa awarded the Presidential Unit Citation Badges from Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to all the present veterans as well as to the families of the deceased veterans to make manifest the Philippine Government’s gratitude and appreciation for their heroic efforts. A closing statement from Filipino veteran Amadeo Urbano (lower left photo) of Arlington, VA concluded the program.
