08/10/2018: Advisory on Hurricane Michael

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Philippine Embassy advises Filipino communities along the path of Hurricane Michael to monitor the movement of the storm, undertake all necessary preparations, and heed the warnings of local officials as the Category 1 hurricane progresses toward the US Gulf Coast.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that Michael may be a Category 3 hurricane, with winds from 111 to 129 mph, when it reaches the coast on Wednesday, 10 October.

Storm surge, heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds are anticipated to produce life-threatening conditions and flash flooding from Alabama, northeastern Florida, and southeastern Georgia into portions of the Carolinas through Thursday.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in 26 of the state’s counties.

There are approximately 232,000 individuals of Filipino origin residing in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and the Carolinas.

The Philippine Embassy will continue to monitor developments and coordinate with the Filipino and Filipino-American communities in these areas.

For emergencies requiring the Embassy's assistance, please call (202) 368 2767. ###
