07/11/2012: Pinoys Told to Prepare as Winter Storm Hits US Northeast

7 November 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Nine days after they went through one of the worst storms in American history, the Filipino Community in the Northeastern United States is once again being advised to brace itself for the arrival of yet another storm.

In an advisory, the Philippine Consulate General in New York urged Filipinos to observe the necessary precautions, stay indoors during inclement weather and avoid unnecessary travel as the winter storm is expected to affect the area starting today until Thursday.

“Our kababayans are advised to ensure that they have a supply of flashlights, batteries and other similar equipment, potable water and food which is not easily perishable and warm clothing in case of power outages,” Consul General Mario L. De Leon Jr. said.

The Consulate issued the advisory as authorities told thousands of people in low-lying and coastal areas affected by Hurricane Sandy last week to leave their neighborhoods as the new storm, although less powerful, will bring in rain, wet snow and strong winds that could trigger floods, uproot trees and cut electricity.

Consul General De Leon said members of the Filipino Community in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine have been advised to check updates from their local councils, utilities providers, and media on developments regarding the winter storm.

Filipino Community members in New York who may need assistance in finding shelter during the winter storm can proceed to public shelters as well as bus pick-up locations for travel to shelters that have been prepared by the City Government.

Several Filipino-American run centers may also accommodate those needing urgent temporary shelter during the winter storm.   Those who wish to secure more information about possible accommodations at Filipino Community-run facilities can contact the Philippine Consulate General’s duty lines at 347-327-1884 or 917-294-0196 or the Assistance-to-Nationals line at  646-421-9072.
