31/01/2012: Fundraising Activities in Washington, D.C. Continue for Sendong Victims

31 January 2012, Washington DC. The Philippine American Foundation for Charities (PAFC) and Katipunan, with the support of the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., held separate activities last January 28 and 21, respectively, to raise funds for the victims of Typhoon Sendong.

Led by its chairman, Ador Carreon, and president, Eileen Nadal, PAFC staged the Alay Concert at the Pryzbyla Center of the Catholic University of America.  The show featured performances by local talents including Nicole de las Alas, Ivy Rose, Tutubi, Trademark, Miguel Braganza, Show Pow, Gail Banawis, Russ Arlota, Rod Garcia Band, and Tanghalan Pilipino.

In his remarks to kick-off the occasion, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. conveyed the Philippine government’s profound gratitude to PAFC for spearheading the event and heeding the Embassy’s call to organize efforts to take part in providing humanitarian assistance for the typhoon victims.  He also applauded the time and commitment of the volunteers and performers for coming together and bringing hope to their affected kababayans.

PAFC also organized the Happy Hour Fundraiser for Typhoon Sendong victims on January 24 at the Hudson Restaurant in Washington, D.C.  The owners of the establishment agreed to donate the $10 cover charge to the Sendong fund, as well as 20 percent of drink sales.  Attended by Filipinos and Americans alike, the jam-packed event was co-hosted by the Ateneo Alumni Associaton, Bicol Association of Metro Washington D.C., Feed the Hungry, La Salle Alumni Association, Medical Mission of Mercy, National Multicultural Center, and Phil-Am  Chamber of Commerce of Metro D.C.

In Baltimore, various Filipino American organizations led by the Katipunan Filipino-American Association in Maryland organized the Dinner for Hope:  A Benefit to Aid the Victims of Typhoon Sendong.  Proceeds from the sales of dinner tickets, raffle prizes, and donations would augment Katipunan’s initial donation of $1,000 to the Philippine Red Cross.  The organization, led by Helen Sadorra as its president, is targeting a total pledge of $10,000 to aid in the relief and rebuilding of the hard-hit communities in Northern Mindanao.

Minister Ariel Peñaranda represented the Embassy at the affair.  In his remarks, Minister Peñaranda enumerated the efforts undertaken by the Aquino administration to alleviate the suffering of the residents of the affected areas.  He also extolled the swift action and effective response of Katipunan and other organizations in the Greater Baltimore Area to the needs of the typhoon victims.  

The Apha Phi Omega (APO) District of Columbia Alumni Association, headed by Vic de Leon, also took part in the relief operations with the shipment last January 16 of a 20-foot container van filled with donated goods (blankets, towels, first aid medicine, toiletries, dry milk, school supplies, flatware, footwear, beddings, dry/canned goods, prescription glasses, multi-vitamins, and personal hygiene items).  Donors were asked to simply fill a balikbayan box with the goods and their share of the shipment fee.  APO arranged the transport and is ensuring that the goods will arrive directly at the disaster area.  END
