21 NOVEMBER 2011, WASHINGTON, DC. Philippine Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. met on November 3, 2011 with Representative Edward Randall "Ed" Royce, the Republican Representative for California's 40th congressional district, who has been serving in Congress since 1993. The district lies in northern Orange County, including portions of Stanton, Cypress, Buena Park, Fullerton, Anaheim, Placentia, and Orange.

Ambassador Cuisia thanked Representative Royce for being a co-sponsor of the Save Our Industries Act (H.R. 2387). The congressman announced his co-sponsorship of the said bill during the 17th Annual Awards Night and Gala of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Orange County (FACCOC).

During the meeting, Representative Royce told the Ambassador that more focus should be redirected to the Philippines and that SAVE Act is a good start for long-term cooperation. Ambassador Cuisia cited the fact that the Philippines and the United States have never had a special trade agreement in 40 years. Ambassador Cuisia also noted Representative Royce’s recognition of the commitment to reforms of President Benigno Aquino III. Representative Royce emphasized the importance of reforms in the areas of business transactions, transparency, and the rule of law. He also called for increased protection for the press. Ambassador Cuisia expressed appreciation for the congressman’s concern and pointed to the continuing decrease in the number of journalists who were alleged to have been killed in the Philippines, an increase in the number of convictions for these incidents, and the serious efforts being exerted by the Aquino Administration to address this issue.

Representative Royce is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and sits on the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific. He is also a member of the Philippines-United States Congressional Friendship Caucus.  END.
