26/10/2011: Ambassador Cuisia Meets Representative Connolly of Virginia

26 OCTOBER 2011, WASHINGTON, DC. Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. met on October 24, 2011 with Congressman Gerald E. “Gerry” Connolly, the Democratic Representative for Virginia’s 11th District, which encompasses Fairfax County, Prince William County, and the City of Fairfax in Northern Virginia. The 11th District is ranked among the top ten districts in the nation in terms of per capita income and is known to be the heart and soul of Northern Virginia. Ambassador Cuisia briefed Congressman Connolly on the bilateral relations between the Philippines and the United States. Congressman Connolly appreciated a discussion on US policy towards the Asia-Pacific and stated that the United States is a Pacific power and must maintain its presence in the region. On trade, Congressman Connolly assured the Ambassador that he would take a careful look at the Save Our Industries Act which he believes has very good co-sponsors. He said that being a free trader, he is supportive of trade agreements that promote jobs. Ambassador Cuisia noted that the SAVE Act bill is supported by a good number of Filipino Americans in Northern Virginia. During the meeting, Congressman Connolly expressed strong interest in becoming a member of the Philippines-United States Friendship Caucus. The Congressman said he welcomes Filipino Americans getting more involved in the district’s political process.

Congressman Connolly serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.  As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Representative Connolly serves on two Subcommittees: Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade; and the Middle East and South Asia. Representative Connolly is also a member of the pro-business New Democrat Coalition, chair of the Innovation Task Force, co-chair of the Smart Contracting Caucus, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Korea, and co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Taiwan.  END.
