09/09/2011: Ambassador Cuisia Meets with Senator Wicker of Mississippi

09 SEPTEMBER 2011, WASHINGTON DC. Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. met with Senator Roger Wicker on September 7, 2011 and discussed the bilateral and strategic relations between the Philippines and the United States. Senator Wicker is the Republican Senator from Mississippi and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Senator Wicker told Ambassdor Cuisia that it has been ten years since he visited the Philippines. While the meeting focused on the West Philippine Sea and the SAVE Our Industries Act, the Senator showed very keen interest in various other issues about the Philippines. He welcomed plans to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Philippines-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty. He was also pleased to learn that the Philippine economy is performing very well under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III. On his query about the Millennium funds for the Philippines, Ambassador Cuisia informed him that the CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Daniel Yohannes, is impressed with the implementation of the Philippine Compact under the leadership of Secretary Cesar Purisima.

Senator Wicker has been honored by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) for his work on pro-growth, pro-manufacturing policies in Congress. Twice, he has been recognized as a "champion" of polio eradication for his work to wipe out polio worldwide. END
