03/08/2011: Summer Campers from Silver Spring, MD Learn about the Philippines

Summer campers from Silver Spring, Maryland visited the Philippine Embassy on 29 July 2011 and had a dialogue with Third Secretary Corina Apostol-Reyes (rightmost).

03 August 2011, Washington, DC – The participants in the summer camp organized by the Metropolitan Community Development Corporation (MCDC) in Silver Spring, Maryland visited the Embassy of the Philippines on 29 July 2011 to learn about the rich and diverse culture of the Philippines. Most of the student participants, with age range 4 to 16 years old, come from immigrant families.

MCDC is a non-profit community development organization that aims to improve the quality of life of people living in Silver Spring. It provides social services and implements economic empowerment programs. The organization was established by the Bethel World Outreach Church to address the challenges faced by immigrants and the economically disadvantaged in metropolitan Washington, DC.

After listening to the presentation on the history, culture and government of the Philippines followed by an open forum, the participants enjoyed Filipino treats turon (banana fritters) and chicken empanada (chicken turn-over). -- END
