16/03/2011: DA and DOST Undersecretaries Meet U.S. Counterparts during APEC Meetings in DC

16 March 2011, Washington DC. On the sidelines of the recent APEC meetings in Washington D.C., Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Dr. Segredo R. Serrano met with his counterpart, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Acting Undersecretary Michael Scuse  to affirm the strong and friendly bilateral agriculture relationship and discuss how both countries can further collaborate on issues such as biotechnology, biofuels development, climate change adaptation, sustainable agriculture, agricultural extension, rural livelihood development, trade and investments. Also in attendance at the February 28 meeting were USDA's Foreign Agriculture Service officials Dr. Jeannie Harvey, Patricia Sheikh, Susan Phillips, Philippine DA's policy and planning focal person for climate change Alicia Ilaga, and Agriculture Attaché Dr. Josyline Javelosa, who is based at the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC.

Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for Research and Development Dr. Graciano Yumul, Jr. also met with various US agencies, including the  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Department of State from March 8 to 10  to discuss further avenues for cooperation on science and technology with a focus on how the  agriculture and fisheries sectors cope with climate change and global competition. Shown below is the Philippine delegation visiting the National Science Foundation, an independent federal agency to promote the progress of science, which has a similar mandate as the DOST.
